ADULT SERIES STUDIES JESUS' BROTHER

Maybe you have heard about it on the news or read an article in the newspaper.  It might be that you came across a review in a news magazine or heard an interview on one of the morning news programs.  Many people are talking about the new book, The Brother of Jesus, by Hershel Shanks and Ben Witherington, both respected authorities on archeology and the Bible.
The book is the story and examination of one of the most momentous archeological discoveries of our time: the first-century ossuary of Jesus' brother, James.  An ossuary is a burial box used to hold the bones of family members.  The box often bears an inscription, just as cemetery markers or gravestones are used today.  The inscription on this box reads: "James, son of Jo

seph, brother of Jesus."
For the four Sundays of May an adult study series will be offered at 9:00 in the Victorian Parlor.  Each week a different aspect of this discovery will be discussed.  On May 4, the first Sunday of the series, the group will look at Biblical passages that refer to Jesus' family.  We will number and name his relatives and learn as much about them as is known today.  On the following Sunday mornings, we will hear the story of the ossuary's discovery and authentication; how this discovery reveals surprising facts about a story people thought they knew; and how Jesus' own family responded to his mission and ministry.  We also will discuss James, himself, his role in the spread of Christianity and the beginnings of the church.

WORDS ABOUT WORSHIP. . .

Positive responses have been heard  to recent changes in worship:  "It flows," some people have said when referring to the order of worship.  "We don't pop up and down all the time," another commented.  "The service is more reverent," someone else offered.  And of course: "I like being done in an hour!"

This Sunday, May 4, the sermon is "Working At It."  Scripture readings are Philippians 3:7-16 and Luke 24:36-48.  We are in the Easter season and sing Alleluia! in response to the resurrection.  The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be shared this Sunday and there will be a place for you!
